The Newton High School softball team split a doubleheader against Abilene Thursday at Kelsch Field to snap a 34-game losing streak dating back to the 2015 season.
Newton lost the first game 13-7, but won the nightcap 11-10, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
In the first game, Newton scored a run in the first inning. Abilene came back with two runs in the top of the third inning. Newton regained the lead with a three-run third inning. Abilene pulled away with eight runs in the top of the fourth. The two teams matched runs the rest of the way.
Celina Perez had four hits for Newton. Dawsyn Long and Kyndal Bacon each drove in three runs.
Maci Debenham and Turner Alderson each had two hits for Abilene. Debenham drove in three runs.
Emily Burt went the distance pitching for Abilene for the win, striking out two. Alejandra Llamas pitched a complete game for Newton, striking out one.
In the second game, Newton trailed 8-6 after three innings. Abilene added a run in the top of the fourth, but the Railers tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Abilene regained the lead with a run in the top of the seventh, but the Railers came back with two runs in the bottom of the inning for the win.
Reagan Treffer had three hits and four RBIs to lead Newton. Long also had three hits. Bacon drove in three runs.
Burt had two hits for Abilene. Jensen Roth drove in three runs.
Freshman Zoe Stonehouse pitched a complete game for Newton for her first varsity win. She struck out one. Kate Luty pitched six innings for Abilene, striking out two. Hannah Willey pitched the bottom of the seventh and was charged with the loss.
Abilene is 2-6. Newton is 1-9 and plays at 4 p.m. today at Derby in AV-CTL I play.
