The Lady Titan Softball team hosted a tough Girard Lady Trojan team on Tuesday at the Columbus Community Field Complex. Errors were the key to the game as Girard came out on top in both games.

Game 1 was a hard fought game that remained scoreless through the first 4 innings. Haley Evans and Jessica Anderson both had singles early but Columbus failed to score the runners. Girardís first hit came in the top of the fifth inning when Kylie Kunshek lead off with a triple and scored on a passed ball. Peyton Herlocker and Kenzie Dunlap walked and Danelle Walsh loaded the bases with single, but the Lady Titan defense held to close out the inning without allowing any more runs.

Anderson led off the bottom of the 5th inning with a double. Makenna Billesbach reached first base on a Run-Batted-In (RBI) single to score Anderson. Haley Touchtonís sacrifice bunt moved Billesbach into scoring position but she was left on base at the end of the inning. The game was tied at 1 point each. Columbus shut out Girardís 3 batters in the top of the 6th inning and loaded the bases with walks by Kate Overman, Maeleigh Soper, and Anderson in the bottom of the inning but could not plate any runs. Hope McLeod reached first base on a Lady Titan error to lead off the top of the 7th inning. She scored on a passed ball to put her team up 2 Ė 1. Dunlap followed with a double but was left on base. Girardís defense finished the game with fly balls caught by the right fielder and the third baseman and a play from the pitcher to first base.

In the second game, Girard scored first with 2 runs in the top of the third inning with hits by Peyton Herlocker (2B) and Danelle Walsh (1B) and an error by Columbus. The Lady Titans had one base runner in the bottom of the 5th inning when Kaitlyn Vanatta was hit by a pitch but couldnít score the run. Vanatta led off the bottom of the 6th inning with a triple. Haley Evans reached first base on a walk. Reagan Soper came up to bat with runners on second and third and hit a triple to pick up 2 RBIís. Maeleigh Soperís RBI single scored Reagan Soper and gave the Lady Titans a 3 Ė 2 lead.

The lead was short lived when Girardís Brittany Beaty reached first base safely on an error in the top of the 7th inning. The Lady Trojans scored on a single by Hope McLeod and a double by Madison Smith to take back the lead 5 Ė 3. Columbus was 3 batters up and 3 batters down to end the game with Girard on top.

Coach Amiee Saporito, in her second match up as head coach for the Lady Titans, felt her team played well for early season games and was pleased with the close scoring games. Girard dominated in their first games of the season by 20 points. Another former Lady Titan, Sam Overman, is assistant coach in her first year with Columbus.

The Lady Titan varsity team will be in action Friday, April 8 in Parsons for make-up games. They Lady Titan junior varsity team will host Labette County Lady Grizzlies on Monday, April 11. Games begin at 4:30pm.
