INDEPENDENCE — The Columbus Lady Titan Basketball team pulled off a squeaker against the Independence Lady Bulldogs Friday night at Independence.
A last second shot off a rebound by 6-foot 3-inch junior Jessica Anderson gave the Lady Titans a 36-35 win over the second-ranked Lady Bulldogs. Columbus is now 2-6.
The play came when Haley Evans missed her shot and Anderson grabbed the rebound and made the putback.
“They let her play,” Head Coach Kenny Boeckman said Monday. “They didn’t double team her or guard her close.”
Boeckman said Anderson has been a force on the inside all season.
“She gets most of our rebounds and she doesn’t get in foul trouble much,” he said.
The Titans had been behind much of the game and ended the half down 23-19, but an eight to two third quarter gave the Lady Titans the lead and with just seconds to go they were down by one, but Anderson’s last second putback was the difference in the game.
Anderson was the only player in double figures for the Lady Titans during the low-scoring affair with 12, although Danielle Roberts was one goal away with eight points.
Independence had two players in double figures, Talor Smith and Kelby McGrath both with 13.
Boeckman said he was happy with the win.
“Anytime you can go on the road and win it’s great,” he said. “But to do it against the No. 2 team in the league is just outstanding.”
The Lady Titans are in action today at 4 p.m. against Oswego at the Lancer Classic in Cherokee.
