The Columbus Titan football team had a long ride home following their loss at Chanute Friday night 18-22.

Neither team made any progress in their first possessions going 3 and out. Columbus took their second possession inside their 5 yard line. Following a 9-yard run on their first down, the Titans fumbled on their second down giving Chanute a first down on the 11 yard line in Titan territory. The Blue Comets took advantage of the good field position and scored first on a 17-yard pass from Matt Bollig to Alec Haight.. The extra point attempt was good and Chanute led 7-0 halfway through the first quarter.

Columbus able to move the ball down the field through the air with Damion Tinnin completing passes of 4 yards to Dale Benedict and 33 yards to Lewis Kellogg. Overcoming penalties, the Titans found themselves with a fourth down and 7 yards to the goal line. An incomplete pass to Matt Crain in the end zone, gave Chanute the ball on their own 7 yard line to start the second quarter.

The Titan defense came up big when Wade Robinson picked off a Bollig pass and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown. Brandon Albertyís PAT was no good and the Titans trailed 6-7.

The teams again traded 3 and outs and Columbus was pinned back on their 5 yard line. Tyrone Walls took the punt back into Titan territory for Chanute where Tinnin brought him down and saved a touchdown. Another big gain and a Columbus penalty gave Chanute a shot at the end zone. Chase Leonard busted through with a sack for a loss forcing the Comets to try a field goal on forth and long. Andrew Parish was good on the 33 yard attempt extending their lead 10-6.

The Titans couldnít get a first down and punted after 3 downs.

Chanute gave the ball back to the Titans on a fumble on the 47 yard line. Robinson ran 27 yards, Benedict 19 yards and Kellogg 4 yards to the Comet 3 yard line. A loss and an incomplete pass on fourth and 5 left Columbus short and unable to capitalize on the turnover.

Tank Burns sacked Bollig on the 3 yard line and Chanute ran out the clock to end the half with a 10-6 lead.

Chanute received the second half kickoff but had to punt.

Columbus made the best of their first, second half possession. Dale Benedictís 19 yard pass reception and Wade Robinsonís 33 yard catch and run moved the ball deep into Comet territory. Damion Tinninís 6-yard pass to Benedict was good for a Titan touchdown. The 2 point conversion attempt failed but the Titans took the lead 12-10.

The Comets had to punt their next possession but caused a Titan fumble on the first down. Chanute had a first down on the Columbus 25 yard line and threatened to score. The Titans held them to a 28 yard field goal attempt that was no good.

The failed field goal gave the Titans the ball on their 20 yard line. Matt Crainís 80-yard catch and run for a touchdown on the first down put Columbus on top 18-10 with just under three minutes left in the third quarter. The PAT was no good.

Chanute held onto the ball for the rest of the third quarter giving it back to Columbus on the 15 yard line when a fourth and 8 pass attempt went incomplete as the fourth quarter began. The Titans were held to 3 and out and punted to Chanute who took over on the 47 yard line.

A quick 30 yard pass play from Bollig to Parish for a Comet touchdown brought them closer to the Titans 16-18. The 2 point conversion attempt failed.

The back and forth of the two teams included an interception by Damion Tinnin of a Mat Bollig pass on the Chanute 32 yard line. Benedict and Robinson each had catch and run plays for 30 and 15 yards respectively for a first down on the 15 yard line. Robinson was shaken up on the play and would not return for the remainder of the game. Lewis Kellogg picked up 5 yards but the Titans gave up 16 yards to the Comet defense on the next play for fourth and 11 yards to go. The fourth down pass was incomplete once again and Chanute took control on their 17 yard line with 2:26 left in the game. A pass play from Bollig to Tyrone Walls of 21 yards and a catch and run by Walls for 61 yards put the Comets in the end zone for the go ahead score 22-18.

The Titans were unable to move the ball in the last 1:06 of the game and the Comets came out on top.

Yardage for Columbus, 343 total yards, came from Damion Tinnin who was 13 of 28 for 232 yards and 2 touchdowns passing in the loss. Matt Crain caught 3 passes for 107 yards and 1 touchdown. Dale Benedict had 40 yards on 10 carries and 4 pass receptions for 56 yards and a touchdown. Wade Robinson had 3 carries for 57 yards and 2 receptions for 18 yards. Lewis Kellogg made 4 catches for 51 yards and ran 14 yards on 12 carries.

Coach Dan Grundy was disappointed in his teamís performance and took the blame on himself, "I didnít have them ready. Thatís what it comes down to, I didnít have them ready."

The Titans look to bounce back at home next Friday against Coffeyville.
