RIVERTON - Riverton's Head Coach Derrick Rider makes the defense the following week of a game do Bear Crawls in practice for each point allowed. An exhausting 40 yards on all fours. With a 48-0 shut out the defense got a reprieve.
Neither team could get much started the first quarter which ended at 0-0. Baxter Springs punted away the ball their first three possessions.
The Ram's offense came alive in the second quarter with five touchdowns, three of them runs by junior Quarterback Greyson Spriggs. Spriggs first score was set up by a run by senior KeeShawn Walker to the one yard line. Spriggs sneaked in from the one. Junior Nolan Wall kicked the extra point.
After Baxter Springs went four and out, Spriggs hooked up with junior Dylan Weaver who moved the ball to the 10. Spriggs scampered to his left to put the Rams up 14-0 with Wall's conversion. Spriggs' third touchdown of the quarter started at the Lions 47 after a Ram holding penalty. On three runs by Walker and a 12 yard strike from Spriggs to Weaver, the Rams moved to the 21. Spriggs moved to his left and reversed the field for a 20-0 score. Spriggs ended with 98 yards passing on 12 carries and 98 yards rushing on 12 attempts.
Riverton's Senior lineman Dillon Betsey recovered a Lion fumble on the Ram's 21 yard line. For their fourth TD, senior Tyler Morrill ran to the 12 yard marker and with Spriggs' pass to junior Hunter Deckard moved to ball to the one. Morrill ran in on the next play and then picked up the 2-pont conversion.
Baxter Springs started on the Rams 35 and moved the ball on two runs by senior Colton Krokroskia. The Rams' freshman safety Landon North stepped in front of a Krokroskia pass for his first high school interception.
Next sophomore Chandler Underhill scrambled left for a 35 yard run to the 14 yard sideline. While out of bounds, a Lion player jabbed Underhill in the throat. With the penalty the ball was moved to the 7 yard line. Underhill swept right for the score. Wall made the score 35-0 with his kick.
In the third quarter, Deckard picked off a pass a pass and ran the 61 yards for the score. With Wall's kick the Rams went up 42-0.
Early in the fourth quarter, Morrill ran in from the 3 yard line for the final 48-0 score.
For the game, the Ram's defense held the Lions to 63 total yards and three first downs. Baxter Springs Senior Zak Himes had a nice interception.
After the game, Coach Rider said "we had too many penalties. We'll work on that a practice. Our offense started out slow but the coaching staff saw a lot of good things". Assistant Coach Jacob Larison told the boys "That‘s step one-we have a lot of steps to go".
Walker lead the rushing with 74. Underhill had 43 yards on his two carries. With his two touchdowns, Morrill contributed 28 yards. Weaver had 6 receptions for 51 yards. For the game, Riverton amassed 393 total yards and 15 first downs. On the defensive side, Junior Jake Neal lead with 4 solo tackles and 3 assists.
Sophomore Jacob Qualls had 3 solos and 7 assists.
Riverton travels to Erie this Friday.
