GIRARD — The Columbus Titans are a team on the cusp.

After dropping their first game 34-22 to the resurgent Southeast Lancers and falling in double overtime 35-32 to the Fort Scott Tigers two weeks ago, the Titans went into last weeks’ game with the 2-0 Girard Trojans looking for a win to put them over the top.

They’re still looking.

Falling 19-14 in a driving rain, the Titans are now 0-3 and still looking for their first win of the season.

The game started off with a pair of three-and-out drives by both teams before Girard’s Anthony Scholes blew into the endzone from 60 yards out with 7:18 to go in the first quarter. The point after kick was good and the Trojans were up 7-0

The Titans were unable to respond in the first and with at the 10:27 mark of the second quarter Girard Quarterback Brayden Johnson rumbled 7 yards to pick up their second touchdown of the night, and with the center of the field starting to resemble a mud pit, things were not looking good for Columbus.

However with about 6:26 to go in the half, Johnson fumbled the ball and Columbus recovered it on the Trojan 27. Nine plays later at the 2:23 mark of the second quarter Titan Quarterback Nate Bole rumbled in from the 6 and the Titans were on the board. The PAT failed and Columbus was down 13-6.

Columbus pinned the Trojans back deep in their own territory on the kick off and after a holding penalty left Girard on their own 7, Johnson again fumbled and Columbus recovered on the 8 yard line. The next play was a hand off from Nate Bole to Jordan Morgan and Morgan hammered through for the touchdown.

Jace McDown added the two point conversion and AT the end of the first half the Titans had the lead 14-13.

That set off a back and forth struggle over the middle of the field in the scoreless third quarter before Girard again regained the lead on a 6 yard run by Scholes with 10:46 to go in the game. The PAT run failed at the Trojans were up 19-14. The Titans were unable to put together a scoring drive and the Trojans walked off the field with their third straight win.

Girard and 277 yards of total offense to the Titan’s 134.

Scholes led rushing with 236 yards on 29 carries and one touchdown.

Bole led rushing for the Titans with 40 yards on 22 carries and one touchdown. Morgan was leading receiver with 25 yards on two receptions.
