RIVERTON — Run, run, run — hat’s what the Galena Bulldogs did in their 42-12 beat down of the Riverton Rams on Thursday night on the Rams’ home field. The win advances Galena (6-3) to travel to Caney (8-1) Tuesday night.

Coach Beau Sarwinski of Galena told his players “you came out physical, you dominated on offense and defense and kept it rolling. We’re now in the playoffs and all the extra work in the summer paid off.”

The Bulldogs' only pass of the night came with 2:28 left in the game. Sophomore Kyler Cook dumped a short eight yard pass to senior Logan Johnson for Johnson’s third touchdown of the night. Johnson finished with 138 yards rushing.

The three back attack of the Bulldogs was led by senior Trenton Little who bulled straight forward for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Galena’s third 100 yard rusher was sophomore Jacob Helton with 104 including a 15 yard touchdown side line jaunt with 8:36 left in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs scored first on a miss-direction cross buck 13-yard run by Johnson and with an unsuccessful 2 point play.

After the kick off, Riverton started at their 38. Facing a 3rd and 7, senior Greyson Spriggs got a fresh set of downs with a right side run to Galena’s 47. The Rams then were at a 4th and 7 when junior Chandler Underhill connected with sophomore Landon North on a 45 yard TD bomb. The score was tied 6-6.

Galena went ahead 14-6 with one minute gone in the second quarter. The Bulldogs started at the 35 and it was all Little, Johnson, and Helton marching and Little scored from 1 yard out. Johnson’s 2 point right side run put Galena up 14-6.

The Rams had a chance to score just before the half. After a bad punt from Riverton, the Bulldogs started at Riverton’s 32 and again with runs from their three backs got the ball to the 2 and a first and goal. On a fumbled hand off from Cook to Little the Rams Jake Neal fell on the ball at the 5. With over 6 minutes of controlled offense of the Rams, they advanced all the way down to Galena’s 8 yard line. On a 4th and 3, Spriggs was allowed to advance about 2 yards to stop the potential score and the momentum going into the half.

Riverton scored again with 44 seconds left in the third quarter. The Rams’ senior Sam Taylor recovered a fumble at the Bulldogs 39. Underhill hit senior Hunter Deckard at the 8. Spriggs ran up the middle to close the scoring gap 21-12.

As most games this year, Riverton could not stop the run and fell apart in the fourth quarter. Galena scored three times in the fourth on a Little 12 yard line, a 31 yard run by Johnson, and Johnson’s 8 yard catch from Cook.

Riverton’s coach Derrick Rider summed up the game afterwords. “We just got beat” and later added “we didn’t do a good job of tackling…we just weren’t able to do that tonight.”
