CHEROKEE — With head coaching brothers Derrick (Riverton) and Clint (Cherokee Southeast) coaching against each other, it was the Lancers quarterback Josh Thompson and his offensive line that was the show in the Lancers 48-22 defeat of the Riverton Rams.
Thompson in his previous five games had passed for 1,202 yards. With the athletic defensive secondary of the Rams, the Lancers kept the ball on the ground. With Riverton sucking back for Thompson’S expected passes and the tremendous blocking of his line, Thompson ran at will. He rushed for 142 yards on 26 attempts while completing only 4 passes for 87 yards on 9 tries.
The Lancers scored first at around four minutes of the game. Thompson landed a perfect pass to sure handed speedster Dan Peak for 33 yard touchdown. Ryan Rakestraw converted his kick and Lancers led 7-0.
After the kickoff, the Rams started at their 20. Greyson Spriggs on a screen pass advanced to the 37. Hunter Deckard caught two passes to Southeast’s 41. With short runs by quarterback Chandler Underhill and Spriggs, the Rams moved to the 31. Across the middle, tight end Dylan Weaver caught a nice pass at the 20. Spriggs went up the middle to the 15. Austin Powell snagged an outlet pass at the right 8 yard side line. Underhill moved right to the 5. Jake Neal took it up the middle to score and with Ryan Shultz’s kick the score was tied.
Early in the second quarter the Rams had their chance to take the lead. Facing a 4th and 7 Weaver caught a pass to advance the markers. Neal ran to the 27 and next to the 3. With a chop block penalty Riverton was moved completely back to the 43. Peak stepped in front of an Underhill errant pass and ran the interception back 62 yards and with Rakestraw’s kick, the Lancers led 14-7.
Later in the quarter Riverton lost a fumble. On the next play Underhill recovered the Lancer’s fumble. Starting at Cherokee’s 43, Austin Powell on a pass moved the Rams to the 31. After Spriggs run to the 25, Riverton got a penalty and they moved back to the 35. The Rams were soon at a 4th and 11. On Spriggs catch they advanced to the 15. Neal caught a pass at the 6. After a 2 yard run by Underhill, Underhill then ran in from the 4. Shultz’s kick was good and the game was tied again at 14-14.
With 48 seconds left in the half Cherokee went up 21 -14 on Rakestraw’s 27 yard TD from Thompson and Rakestraw’s kick.
On the first series of the second half Cherokee recovered a Ram fumble and the Lancers started another touchdown march. Thompson ran four straight times to the 27. A Riverton personal foul moved the Lancers to the 12. Colton Charlton ran to the 5 and Thompson ran in from there. 27-14.
Riverton stayed in the game 27-22 when they scored with 4:57 left in the third quarter on Underhill’s quarterback sneak. Underhill hit Deckard for the 2-point conversion. The touchdown was set on runs by Underhill and Spriggs and a 20 yard catch by Neal.
The Lancers went on to score 21 points in the fourth quarter. Charlton scored on a run from the 1 and Thompson completed a 2 point conversion pass to Rakestraw.. Rakestraw then scored on a 17 yard pass. With five minutes left in the game, Caleb Biancarelli returned an interception for a 25 yard TD.
Midway through the fourth quarter, the referees and the players from both sides lost control. Tthe teams took out their frustrations on each other and flags flew on about every play the last four minutes.
Spriggs finished with 19 rushes for 58 yards and Underhill 17 attempts for 51. Underhill was 18-32 passing for 173 yards. Deckard received 8 catches for 68 yards and Neal 3 receptions for 43. Sam Taylor led the Rams defense with 9 tackles, and Weaver and Underhill 7 each.
