GALENA — As this year’s high school football season quickly approaches, area teams are already hard at work in preparation for the battles ahead. In Galena, the Bulldogs begin the season after a record of 6-4 last year, which led them to first round action in Class 3A playoffs.
This year, the Bulldogs are standing strong up front with three returning starters on the offensive and defensive lines, including CNC honorable mention Kyle Wilkins, who has the size and skills to be a real threat on the field.
Other battle-hardened players returning this year include quarterback Kyler Cook, running back Logan Johnson and wide receivers Nick Sivert and J.C. Pugsley.
“We will have to get better each week and stay healthy,” said head coach Beau Sarwinski. “We need to take one play at a time.”
Sarwinski believes that, offensively, the key to success this year lies in execution, while defensively, the Bulldogs must be aggressive with the tackles.
“We must control the line of scrimmage and be physical on both sides of the football,” Sarwinski said.
The Bulldogs head into the 2013 season with eight returning lettermen, and seven returning starters on both offense and defense. In the last five seasons, the Bulldogs have advanced into playoff action four times, and are hopeful to make this season even better.
