A Treece man was arrested late last week after telling police his car was stolen before it was involved in an accident.

Marion Lamb, 55, was charged with falsely reporting a crime, after he was involved in an automobile accident and then left the scene. According to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves, on Dec. 17 Lamb was driving his 1994 F350 flatbed pickup truck on SE 20th north of US Highway 166 when it left the roadway, struck a cement bridge damaging the passenger side of the truck and ripping off a motor which controlled a hay fork on the back.

Lamb apparently told deputies the truck had been stolen prior to the accident.

“Through some interviews while investigating it as a stolen vehicle (deputies) discovered he was the one who had been driving,” Groves said.

Falsely reporting a crime is a class A misdemeanor which carries a fine of up to $2,500 and up to one year in jail.

Lamb is free on $4,000 bond.
