The Titan Varsity boys’ team looked to be in playoff form Thursday night as they took on a tough Purple Dragon team in Pittsburg. Both teams were gearing up for their respective sub-state games as they closed out their regular seasons. Pittsburg brought a much taller team to the court with only 3 players under the 6 foot mark and 3 players measuring 6 foot 5 inches or taller, but the Titans matched up and kept coming after them. Columbus trailed 18 – 30 at halftime after being stuck on the 12 point mark for nearly 5 minutes. Forced turnovers helped the Titans effort in gaining ball control in the third quarter and holding the Dragons to a Jordan Elliott 3 pointer in the third quarter, the only points of the quarter by Pittsburg. Unable to capitalize on their defensive effort, the Titans scored just 9 points in the third quarter. A three point shot by Joel Holeman in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter put the Titans within 3 points, 30 – 33. As time was running out, Coach Jeff Renn’s Titan team needed to foul to try and regain ball possession when Pittsburg went to a stalling offense. The Dragon players made 6 of their 10 free throws, to account for almost half of their 14 fourth quarter points. Holeman added another 3 point basket and Taylor Spear came up with a 2 point basket for the total 8 points of the Titan scoring in the fourth quarter.
