Bertha Mae Allen, 86 of The Autumn Place in Columbus, Kansas, formerly of rural McCune, Kansas died Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, Mo., after a short illness.
She was born September 6, 1922 in Sherman City, to Nicholas and Nora Belle (Trammell) Walker and grew up in the area attending school in Sherman City and West Mineral.
Bertha Mae married Cleo E. Allen of West Mineral, on February 20, 1940 and they resided for 50 years southwest of McCune.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Nick and Nora Walker, three sisters, Margaret Woods, Helen Best and Mary Louise Bradfield. Eight brothers, Howard as an infant, Homer, John Alex, Jim, Bob, Nicholas, Paul and Dempsey Walker and, a grandson, Scott Allen.
She is survived by her husband Cleo, of the Autumn Place, three sons and their spouses; Cleo Clayton Allen and Dee of Topeka, Merle Wayne Allen and Vicky of Joplin, Mo. and Glenn David Allen and Erla of Independence, Ky. Also surviving are six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous neices and nephews.
Visitation will be held at the Murdock Funeral Home in Columbus at 1 p.m. with services at 2 p.m., Saturday, January 3, 2009 with Rev. Dennis Johnson officiating. Interment will follow in the Sherman City Cemetery.
