BAXTER SPRINGS - In a rare three set loss, the Lady Lions went down to Oswego in the Quad Games on their home court. Baxter Springs won the first set in overtime 27-25, but went down 25-23 and 25-21 in the next two.
"The girls took the loss and learned from it," Coach Alayna Von Moss said. "They learned they have to be ready to go from the beginning all the way through to the end. We were very inconsistent and making a lot of mistakes we don’t normally do. I’m usually happy with our defense, and it just wasn’t there. Oswego came ready to play, and we just didn’t capitalize on the little things."
Baxter Springs downed Galena 25-0 25-4, and Cherokee Southeast 25-16, 25-20.
A setter’s main role in volleyball is to put the ball just right for a team mate to score. Senior Cheyenna Von Moss did just that with her 72 assists for the night. On defense she even picked 26 digs before the ball hit the court. Von Moss, at 5’ 5”, also had 5 kills at the net.
Senior Riley Abernathy had another fine evening with 39 kills, 6 serving aces, 3 blocks and 15 digs. Senior Carly Locke had 14 kills, 3 aces, 1 block and 13 digs. 5’ 11” freshman Delainey Barnes finished with 10 kills, 3 aces and 4 blocks. Senior Bailey Bush completed 11 kills and 4 blocks. Defensive specialist senior Hailey Horn came through with 15 digs. Sophomore Kassity Shafer finished with 3 kills, 4 digs and 4 assists. Libero sophomore Bridgett Dewey did her job with 16 digs, and an outstanding 9 serving aces.
The Lady Lions continue play Thursday, Oct. 13, in Riverton. First volley is scheduled for 5 p.m.
