BAXTER SPRINGS - Baxter Springs High School Senior, Emily Spencer, recently scored a 34 on the ACT. When asked what helped her earn the high score, Emily gave credit to her parents, Neil and Laura.

"They fostered a love of learning in me," Emily said. "They also encouraged me to read a lot."

College admissions and scholarship opportunities weigh heavily on high ACT test scores. Emily’s composite score of 34 places her in the 99th percentile of all students taking the test.

The average ACT score for Kansas is 21.7, while the National average is 21.0.

Spencer is very involved in extra-curricular activities in addition to excelling academically. Emily is a member of Student Council and the Chess Club, where she serves as vice-president for each. She is the captain of the Scholar’s Bowl Team, and she serves as president of both Science Club and Spanish Club. Emily also enjoys serving the community as a member of the LEO Club.

Post-high school plans for Emily include attending college and majoring in Secondary Education. She is awaiting notice of scholarship awards before committing to a specific college. One additional fact to note: Emily was named a Commended Scholar by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
