Richard E. Cassell, 84 of Baxter Springs, Kan. passed from this life on Sunday, December 3, 2017 at Quaker Hill Nursing Home.

Richard was born February 16, 1933 in Columbus, Kan. to the union of Edward and Alma (Garrett) Cassell. Richard graduated from Oklahoma State University with a Bachelors of Education degree. After graduating Richard spent his first year teaching social science at Galena High School. He then taught at Ellington Air Force Base and spent three years all in the Houston area. Then he moved to Lompoc, Calif., where he taught at the federal prison for five years. Richard also spent time in Denver, Kentucky, Washington D.C., and Dallas, Texas, where he was in education administration and coordinator for all South-Central prison systems. Richard retired on December 31, 1986.

Richard was a member of the American Correctional Association. He enjoyed fishing, reading, outdoors, and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid animal lover.

Richard was united in marriage to Judy (Taylor) Cassell on August 17, 1977 in Dallas, Texas. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include, one daughter, Karen Cassell and significant other, Bruce Yurman of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one son, Kevin Cassell of Joplin, Mo.; two step-sons, Chuck Cheatwood of Baton Rouge, La., and Shane Sims and wife Kara of Carrolton, Texas; one brother, Jerry Martin and wife Lila of Kansas City; two grandchildren, Audra Cassell, and Aidan Sims.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Evelyn Barnett, and Naomi Burrell; one brother, Gene Cassell.

Memorial graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, December 8, 2017 at Greenlawn Cemetery, rural Columbus, Kan. Online condolences may be expressed at
