BAXTER SPRINGS - With Mr. Morgan’s majestic pep band, and a close first half, the fans were treated with the girls game between the visiting Girard Lady Trojans, and Baxter Springs. The Lady Lions stayed close 11-10 in the first quarter, with four points each from Delaney Barnes and Kassity Shafer, and two from Abbey Underhill.

In the second period Underhill closed the gap 17-15 on a lay-up. The Lady Trojans still commanded a 22-17 lead at the half.

With a full court press that the Lady Lions couldn’t break, they had to settle on single free throws by Barnes and Shafer in the third period. Baxter Springs in only their second game of the season, are playing two freshmen and a sophomore with very little varsity experience at the guard positions. Playing time with these young ladies will improve as their season progresses. The only field goal for the Lady Lions was a quarter ending steal and a lay-up by Underhill. Girard led 30-21 at the end of the third.

The Lady Trojans (1-1) literally threw open their lead in the fourth quarter to finish with the 41-27 victory. The only points from the Lady Lions in the fourth were two field goals and two free throws from Barnes.

Sophomore Barnes led the Lady Lions with 12 points, three block shots, and seven rebounds. Shafer pulled eight boards and added five points. Underhill finished with eight points, twi steals, and five rebounds. Sydnee Crain led the Lady Trojans with 16 points.

The Lady Lions travel to McDonald County High School this Thursday before they break for the holidays.
