WICHITA - If you have seen a typical jumper in track and field events, they are usually over 6’ tall, long legs, and around 200 pounds. Just graduated from Riverton, Jeremiah Wald is atypical. Fairly short and slight of build, he is now the Kansas 3A State Champion in the long jump. Jumping more than a foot further than his mark in the regional’s, Wald in the state meet held last week in Wichita jumped 21’10 3/4”.

Put your thumb and forefinger together and measure 1 ½”. After leaping 44’ 6 ¼” in the triple jump, this is how far he placed second behind Remington Cravens of Ellsworth with his jump of 44’7 ¾”. Quick, get the video and measure the sand indentation.

Two other athletes from Riverton placed high in their Class 3A events. Sophomore Matti Price placed second in the 400m Dash running 58.72, behind the winning time of Hope Thiel of Remington. She placed 6th in the 200M Dash running 26.70. Lauren Carlson of Garden Plain won the event with 26.07.

Junior distance runner J.P. Rutledge garnered two silvers. Luke Oatney of Pleasant Ridge won the 1600M Run in 4:32.33 to outlast Rutledge with his 4:34.63. After running two miles, he missed first again by less than two seconds in the 3200M run. Owen Pearce of Kingman ran a 9:35.45 and Rutledge ran a 9:37.26. Wald and Rutledge led the Rams to a third place team finish with 34 points.

Class 4A State Meet

In Class 4A track and field there is no Division I and II: It’s all 64 Class 4A schools. Matthew Oglesby of Galena finished 4th in the 1600M Run running 4:31.86. First place went to Lakelin Conrad of Wichita-Collegiate with his 4:20.13. Garrett Gantt, of Baxter Springs, placed 8th with his time of 4:35.99. Oglesby also placed 4th in the 3200M Run with a 9:45.34. Cormick Logue of Girard placed 8th with his 9:59.62. Conrad was the winner also in the 3200M running 9:35.15.

Parsons relay team of Gage Friess, Davonte Yates, Dariq Williams, and DaQuan Johnson placed second in the 4X100M Relay with a 43.06. Holcomb won the relay running 43.03. Yates also placed second in the Triple Jump with 44’ 11/2”. First place went to Cameron Key of SM-Miege jumping 46’ 71/2”. Yates took another second in the Long Jump leaping 22’1”. Nick Sarwinski of Galena placed 12th jumping 21’6”. Nahshon Houston of KC-Sumpter won the event with 22’1”.

Running events which require more than eight lanes are divided into preliminary (P) heats. The top eight places qualify for the finals. The top eight in each event also all receive medals. Even though an athlete may not qualify for the finals, it’s still an honor to move on from the regional.
