Fred Arthur Smith Jr., 88, formerly of Baxter Springs, Kan. passed away on May 24, 2018, at a local healthcare facility in St. Joseph, Mo.
Fred was born on May 3, 1930, in Maryville, Mo.
Fred served in the United States Air Force and piloted a B-26 bomber during the Korean War, achieving the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. He continued his service in the Missouri Air National Guard.
He worked as a sales representative for Burggraf Tire for 30 years. Fred was a member of the American Legion Post 206 and Word of Life Church and also a member for years at the First Baptist Church in Baxter Springs, Kan.
Fred made his home in Baxter Springs since 1969 and in the past few years moved permanently to St. Joseph, Mo.
Fred was preceded in death by: his parents Fred A. Smith Sr. and Emma Smith; and his first wife of 42 years, Viola (Vi) Smith.
He is survived by: his wife of 18 years, Mary Christian-Smith; son, Barry and his wife Leigh Ann Smith; daughter, Joyce and her husband Wade Payne; sisters, Eleanor L. Miller, Lois Bundy and Janice Bare; stepchildren, Dirk and Amanda Christian, Darrell Joyce Christian and Debbie Guy Morris; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family will be having a grave side celebration of life beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 30, at the Baxter Springs Cemetery located on the west edge of Baxter Springs. All friends and family are welcome to attend.
