CHEROKEE COUNTY — A head-on collision took the life of a Columbus woman on Wednesday. 

At approximately 11:40 a.m. Wednesday emergency personnel in Cherokee County responded to a wreck at US Highway 400, one mile east of US Highway 69. 

According to a release from the Kansas Highway Patrol, a 2020 Freightliner truck driven by Rafael Phillips, 41, of Mobile, Alabama, was driving west on US Highway 400 and a 2008 Toyota Avalon driven by Lois McCoy, 84, of Columbus, was driving east. Phillips went to the eastbound shoulder and the vehicle that was being passed went to the westbound shoulder causing Phillips and Columbus to hit head on.

The crash resulted in the death of McCoy, the release said, adding that next of kin has been notified. McCoy’s passenger, Darline Mitchell, 84, of Columbus, was taken to Mercy Hospital with a serious injury. Phillips had no apparent injury.
