LEAVENWORTH—After being closed for several months, the playground area of Stubby Park has reopened with new equipment in Leavenworth.
The playground, located at 1501 S. Fourth St., opened July 17. Steve Grant, director of the Leavenworth Parks and Recreation Department, said people have been visiting the park since it reopened.
"It's getting quite a bit of use," he said.
Grant said the new playground equipment includes equipment designed for children ages 5-12 and separate equipment for children younger than 5.
The size of the parking lot also has been doubled.
Grant said the city's Buffalo Bill Cody Park has a popular playground. And the improvements are Stubby were intended to provide another playground destination in Leavenworth.
In January, city commissioners approved a $314,233 bid from BKM Construction, Leavenworth, for the improvements.
While the playground has reopened, work at the park is not yet complete.
Temporary fencing is in place for now. But a permanent fence will be installed.
Grant said the permanent four-foot fence will provide a barrier to prevent children from running from the playground onto Fourth Street.
