Saturday evening the Columbus Fire Department recognized Don Kirk in retirement from the local fire department after 30 years on the department.
Fifteen of those years Kirk served as Fire Chief.
“Kirk has been retired sometime now, but we thought if we drag our feet on the retirement dinner then maybe we could get him to come back,” said Steven Burton.
Before the dinner, Chief Kirk and his wife Laura were seated at the head table. The Fire Department issued Kirk a Golden Axe Mounted on a solid oak plaque measuring about three feet long, inscribed with his name and years of service.
As the firefighters walked through the reception line and shook the former chief’s hand each fireman presented Laura one red rose, totaling 24 roses, in appreciation of her allowing Don to serve with the department.
Following dinner the evening was filled with stories of past fire runs and other remembrances of good times and bad.
