A Baxter Springs man is in jail in Jay, Okla., on a Cherokee County arrest warrant for rape.
Gary Ben Dardenne III, 18, Baxter Springs was arrested at a trailer house in Jay, Okla., and is being held in the Delaware County, Okla., jail pending extradition.
Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves said Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department had received information on Friday that Dardenne had allegedly raped a minor and began an investigation with the assistance of the Baxter Springs Police Department.
Dardenne apparently had been aware law enforcement would be looking for him.
“We believe he left the immediate area Friday to avoid us,” Groves said.
Groves declined to comment on the nature of the alleged rape, citing an on going investigation and sensitivity to the alleged victim.
“There will be additional charges,” he said.
