BAXTER SPRINGS — The Baxter Springs Police Department has received a grant to buy a new voice recorder system.

Baxter Springs Police Chief David Edmondson said the department originally asked for about $12,000 from the Edward J. Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant and was awarded $6,469.

“It would have been nice to get the whole thing,” Edmondson said. “But we’re not complaining by any means.”

Edmondson said the voice recorder system consists of a computer for the dispatcher which records all incoming and outgoing calls.

Edmondson said the new system will be helpful in investigations because officers will be able to go back and listen to original calls.

This is the second JAG grant the Baxter Springs Police Department has received.

Baxter’s grant was part of $3,680,658 being granted statewide.
