A wreck on Highway 7 Wednesday morning had sheriff's deputies scrambling to make sure a group of prisoners were secure.

At about 10:13 a.m. a Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department transportation van was transporting prisoners between Labette and Crawford counties when according to documents from the Kansas Highway Patrol a 2005 Chevrolet Impala driven by Kimberly Dawn Preston, 27, Columbus, made a u-turn in front of the transport van.

The van, a 2009 Chevrolet driven by deputy Kelvin L. Hicks, 44, Wichita, swerved to miss Preston and left the roadway. According to a release from the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department, another deputy, Nadia Betancourt, 39, Wichita was also in the van, along with nine inmates.

According to a release from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, Columbus Fire Department, Cherokee County Ambulance Service and the Kansas Highway Patrol responded.

Both deputies and all nine inmates were taken to Mercy Maude Norton Hospital in Columbus where they were treated and released.

CKSO provided security at the hospital until all the inmates were released, at about 5 p.m.

The accident occurred south of Belleview Road on Kansas Highway 7.
