GALENA — A Galena man is in jail today after allegedly shooting another man to death late Monday night.
According to a release from the Cherokee County Sheriff's Department 38 year-old, Bill S. Barker, was arrested and is currently in custody in the Cherokee County Jail, on allegations of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of 32 year-old, Justin Eakes.
He was formally charged Wednesday afternoon and bail was set at $250,000. His preliminary hearing is tentatively set for June 22.
At approximately 11:44 p.m. on Monday the release said the Cherokee County 911 Center received numerous calls regarding an incident near 11th and Euclid in Galena.
Law Enforcement and Emergency Medical Personnel arrived on scene, and the victim was transported to a Joplin, Mo. hospital where he died early Tuesday morning.
According to Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves officers arrived within minutes and as of 2:30 p.m. Tuesday were still investigating the incident.
"We have interviewed numerous witnesses and are putting the puzzle pieces together," Groves said, but declined to offer details. "With it being an ongoing investigation we're not going to release a lot of details as to the relationship between the various parties."
Formal charges are expected to be filed later this week. Barker is currently being held on $15,000 bond.
