At the Nov. 1 Unified School District 493 School Board meeting the board heard reports from the various department heads as well as updates from the superintendant.

Ben Withers, Central School Counselor, who presented a PowerPoint of  his duties including enrollment course of action, different types of counseling, character education, bully redirection, Kansas Food Bank involvement, and other responsibilities when needed.

Patty Hodgson, CUHS Counselor, made a presentation of her duties including at-risk counseling, college course implementation, course coordination with state guidelines and e-transcripts, increased boys’ and girls’ state participation, Internet linked scholarship site, and class rankings.

Superintendent David Carriger reported on the following facilities projects:

• Central round top gym floor is complete.  Fouts Construction is repairing a wall in the gym that will complete the gym repairs.

• He will meet with an awning company tomorrow to look at the Central School Campus to obtain a quote for sidewalk coverings for a portion of the campus.

• Vital Signs has ordered parts to repair the billboard sign at CUHS.

• Bids are being obtained to replace tile in Highland gymnasium, office area and classrooms.

• He hopes to landscape the CUHS gym area next Spring.

Carriger thanked the board for their participation in the Kansas Learning Network visit.  About forty patrons from the community also participated in the KLN visit as well as groups of students from CUHS and Central.  He said he expects a report from the KLN group around December 1.  Carriger anticipates approximately $100,000 in federal grant funds may be allocated for professional development through the School Improvement Grant program.

Carriger presented the board with a list of noteworthy updates including the State Report Card website, new Deputy Commissioner of the Division of Learning Services at KSDE, nation-wide core standards, new assessments, state revenues and future aid to schools.

Carriger presented a list of the district’s vehicles and mileage report with a suggested replacement schedule over the next eight years.  The report also included a list of district buses and mileage.  He recommended the Board consider purchasing two buses next Summer. 

The board voted to authorize    Carriger to set bid specifications for two additional school vehicles.

The board voted to offer the position of High School Assistant Softball Coach to Sam Overman pending her obtaining emergency teaching certification.

The board voted to accept the resignation of Aaron Rider as High School Head Soccer Coach.

The board voted to offer the Interim CUHS Vice-Principal position to Dan Grundy pending certification and salary negotiation.
