Tony J. Carpino, of Roseland, died at 4:51 p.m., Thursday, November 4, 2010 at Via Christi Hospital at Pittsburg, Kan.
Mr. Carpino was born in Roseland, Kan. the son of Mike and Rose Zaccarello Carpino.
Tony was retired Postmaster of the Scammon Post Office where he worked for 32 years retiring in 2000. He was a lifelong resident of Roseland. He was raised in Roseland, attended Roseland Grade School, and graduated from Cherokee County Rural High School. He later attended Pittsburg State University. He served as store manager at Pittsburg, Parsons, and Joplin and also assisted his best friend at Anthony Stevens Floral in Pittsburg.
Tony was a member of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church at Scammon, “D” Wild One’s, Bi-Centennial Committee, Knights of Columbus 3rd Degree at Scammon, Knights of Columbus 4th Degree at Pittsburg, NAPUS, former city council member at Roseland for 30 years, very active in the Democratic Party, a member of the Joan Finney Inauguration Committee, was instrumental in getting natural gas and water to Roseland, and a member of the Cherokee County Ambulance Board.
Tony was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Carpino; five brothers, an infant brother, Santo, Jim, Frank, and Freddie Carpino.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Pomatto of Roseland; two brothers, John Carpino of Scammon and Mike J. Carpino of Kansas City, Mo.; his best friend, Steve Langerot of Scammon, and many nieces and nephews in which he had a vital role in their lives.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m., Monday, November 8, 2010 at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church at Scammon with Father Chrysostom Ah Maung, Father Larry Parker, and Father Thomas Stroot as concelebrants.
Burial will be at St. Bridget’s Cemetery at Scammon. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church with the Knights of Columbus rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday at the church. The Columbus American Legion will conduct graveside flag folding services. The family suggests memorials to the Building Fund of St. Bridget’s Faith and Family Center.
