Bethel women

The Bethel College women’s tennis team clinched its first berth in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference post-season tournament since 2015 with a 7-2 win over Bethany Wednesday at the Marty Ward Tennis Courts.

Bethel swept the doubles and won four of the six singles matches. Bethany was open at third doubles, fifth singles and sixth singles, giving the Threshers a 3-0 lead entering the meet.

Serena Wong and Jennifer Harrison won in singles play for Bethel. Kimberly Buzbee and Harrison won at first doubles. Breanne Rogers and Mallory Myers won at second doubles.

The post-season berth came in coach Richard Southern’s first year.

The Bethel men fell to Bethany 9-0. Bethany received votes in the NAIA poll.

The Bethel women are 6-6, 5-2 in dual meets. The men are 3-9, 2-5 in dual meets. Bethel ends the regular season at 10 a.m. Saturday at Tabor.

second at Campus

WICHITA — The Newton High School boys’ tennis team fell one point short of a win at the Campus Invitational Wednesday at the Riverside Tennis Center in Wichita.

Andover Central won the meet with 26 points, followed by Newton at 25, Kapaun-Mt. Carmel at 17, Independence at 17, Campus at 12, Winfield at 12, Derby at five and Goddard Eisenhower at three.

“We almost won the meet, lost by one point,” Newton coach Nick Sisson said. “Best tennis I've seen out of the team yet.”

Brandon Murrell took third at first singles. Pablo Ferrer won second singles.

Max Karst and Jordan Singh finished second at first doubles. Cody Murrell and Jason Wong finished second at second doubles.

Newton competes Friday at the Winfield Invitational and Saturday at the Valley Center Invitational.

SALINA — Newton High School diver Kailey Naysmith took second and Carli McCloud took third Wednesday at the Salina Diving Invitational at the Salina South pool.

Newton also took second in the team standings at 33 points.

Emporia’s Haylee Weiss won the meet at 440.70, followed by Naysmith at 389.20 and McCloud at 350.50.

Emporia won the team title.

The entire Newton team competes today at El Dorado.

SALINA — The Newton High School boys’ golf team finished eighth out of 10 teams Thursday at the Salina South Invitational at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

South won the team title at 315, followed by Maize at 316, Salina Central at 322, Emporia at 334 and McPherson at 350.

Newton had a team score of 363.

Jared Murphy of Maize and Logan Roether of Junction City tied for top medalist honors at 74.

Newton was led by Tanner Pauls, who took 12th at 79.

Austin Lackey shot an 89, followed by Erick Hernandez at 97, Zach Engelken at 98, Tanner DeGrado at 101 and Hervey Medina at 110.

Newton competes Monday at the Derby Invitational at the Derby Country Club.
