The Columbus Titan Baseball team fell 4 – 6 to the Lancers of Southeast High School in their season home opener on Tuesday.
Both teams were scoreless through the first 3 innings before the Lancers scored on an error and RBI’s by Dalton Powell and Cody Rakestraw in the top of the fourth inning. Powell picked up 2 more RBI’s and Aaron Lake added one in the top of the fifth inning for the Lancer 6 – 0 lead after five complete innings.
The Titans got their bats going in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Trevor McGlaughlin led off with a base on balls. Junior Colten Stanley’s RBI double started the scoring rally. Junior Tyler Elmore scored Stanley with a double of his own. Elmore scored on a Lancer error that put Senior Jaden Tedlock on first base. Junior Tanner Grant and Senior Chase Leonard each hit singles to keep the rally going. Leonard scored an RBI with his hit. Senior Taylor Spear loaded the bases with a base on balls before the Lancer pitching staff ended the inning and the Titan scoring with a strike out. No runs were scored in the seventh inning by either team.
Southeast’s Powell was the winning pitcher with 11 strike outs and 5 base on balls and allowing 1 hit and no runs. Junior Travis Jones had the loss for the Titans with 4 strike outs and 2 base on balls and allowing 4 hits and 3 runs.
The Lancers took the junior varsity win 8 – 4 in a weather shortened 4 inning game.
The Titan varsity games scheduled for Thursday in Parsons were rained out. Weather permitting, the Titans will host Baxter Springs for varsity and junior varsity games on Friday. Tuesday, April 5, the Titan’s host the Girard Trojans. Games begin at 4:30pm.
Lady Titans Beat Southeast
The Columbus Lady Titan Softball team opened their 2011 varsity season with a 6 – 5 win over the Southeast Lady Lancers from Cherokee at the Community Field Complex on Tuesday.
The near freezing temperatures could have been a factor in the 3 run first inning given up by starting junior pitcher Ashley Newell and the Lady Titan team. The Lady Lancers led 3 – 0 after the first inning. Columbus came alive in the second inning scoring the first 2 batters on RBI’s by Senior Jessica Anderson and Junior MaKenna Billesbach as they batted 8 batters. Cherokee went 0 for 6 batters in the second and third innings but held a 3 – 2 lead after 3 complete innings.
The Lady Lancers extended their lead in the top of the fourth inning picking up 2 more runs on a Titan error. Haley Touchton knocked in a third Lady Titan run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Southeast led 5 – 3 after four complete innings.
Junior Pitcher, Bre Mogle allowed 1 hit in each of the last 3 innings and striking out 2 batters as the Lady Titans held the Lady Lancer scoreless with 7 put outs from a tough infield squad. In the mean time, Columbus chipped away at the Lancer lead scoring 1 run on errors in the fifth and sixth innings.
Tied at 5 runs each going into the bottom of the seventh and final inning of regulation, Kaitlyn Vanatta led the Lady Titans off with a single. Juniors Haley Evans and Reagan Soper followed with bases on balls to load the bases with no outs. Mogle took her place in the batter’s box with 1 out and bases loaded. She ran the count to 2 balls and 2 strikes before hitting a single to score Vanatta for the 7 – 6 win.
The Lady Titan varsity team will be in action on Thursday in Parsons for a double header and Friday back at home to host Baxter Springs. Games start at 4:30pm.
